PS Bowl-A-Thon 2010: Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl

Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl

The Where and When:
December 30th, 10:00 p.m. est, Qualcomm Stadium, SAN DIEGO, CA ESPN/ESPN3.

The Who:
#18 Nebraska Cornhuskers (10-3, 6-2 Big 12) vs Washington Huskies (6-6, 5-4 Pac 10)

The Why:
For its swan song in the Big 12, Nebraska almost completed it in story book fashion. Coming up just short in the Big 12 championship game to finish second in the conference. This will be the Huskers second straight trip to the Holiday bowl and 47th bowl all-time

Washington finished the season strong getting enough wins to put them into the bowl game. They finished 3rd in the Pac 10 and are playing in their first bowl since 2002 and is their 31st all time.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Nebraska is the true definition of one dimensional. The 35th ranked total offense is 28th in scoring and led by the 9th ranked rushing attack. And that is their one dimension as they are 109th in the passing game. Defensively they are solid. Tenth in total defense they shut people down only allowing 17.2 ppg. They are better against the pass at 7th than the run (51st).

Washington is really an average to bad team statistically. The 75th total offense, only averages 22.1 ppg (93rd). They are decent running at 45th and less than average passing at 76th. And defensively aside from their 36th ranked pass defense, they are less than stellar. Just the 84th total defense, they are 93rd in scoring and 103rd against the run.

Washington beat two winning teams all year finishing 2-5. Nebraska was 6-1 against non winning teams. These two teams met prior and Nebraska shellacked the Huskies 56-21 in Washington.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
More Huskies!!! Yeah!!! And I have to say that I am terrified of that blow up Lil' Red guy. He scares the BeJesus out of me. So, Huskies, Huskies, Hus..kies!

Vegas Edge
The Huskers are a two TD favorite in this game and I'm surprised it not more. Although in the last five games the Huskies are 5-0 ATS where Nebraska is just 2-3.

The Sweatpants Verdict:
Washington finished 3rd in the Pac 10! How awful was that conference this year? They are 6-6. Wow. That is going to weigh heavy on me when I pick the BCS championship game.

Anyway, I'm in a pool were you pick winners and assign confidence points. I have this game like second in confidence points. This should really be no contest. Unless the Huskies figured out how to stop the run, which in their losses to Stanford and Oregon down the stretch they didn't, I just can't see this game being close. Nebraska wins and covers on it's way to the Big 10.
