PS Bowl-A-Thon 2010: Chick-fil-A Bowl

Chick-fil-A Bowl

Get ready for lots of cow commercials

The Where and When:
December 31st, 7:30 p.m. est, Georgia Dome, ATLANTA, GA ESPN/ESPN3.

The Who:
#20 South Carolina Gamecocks (9-4, 5-3 SEC) vs #23 Florida State Seminoles (9-4, 6-2 ACC)

The Why:
South Carolina competed for it's first SEC championship and fell just short finishing second to Auburn. This is the third consecutive and 16th overall bowl game for the Gamecocks.

FSU had a solid year finishing second in the ACC in their first year A.B. (After Bowden). This is their second straight bowl game and 38th all time.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
South Carolina is a very well rounded team. Offensively they are decent. They are the 49th, 36th, 60th and 47th ranked total, scoring, rush and passing offense. Defensively they've been equally as good. Ranked 52nd in total offense, they give up 22.9 ppg (43). They excel against the run at 8th but struggle against the pass at 107th.

Florida State is fairly similar. The 55th ranked total offense they are just behind USC at 37th in scoring. They are pretty balanced with the 42nd rushing and 62nd passing attacks. Defensively they are good. The 39th ranked total D is surrendering only 19.8 ppg (22nd). They are 26th against the run and 64th against the pass.

Both teams stayed above water against winning teams. The Gamecocks went 4-3 and FSU was 5-4. When they faced ranked foes, not as successful with USC going 1-3 and FSU 0-2. They had identical records to finish at 3-2.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
This is a tough one. They are both red and black. Both mascots are so not PC, I want to throw up. I do like that the Florida coach guy is named Jumbo or something. But that visor coach is good too, right? Um...I really had a good time at Myrtle Beach one time. I'll pick them. Go Carolina!

Vegas Edge
South Carolina is currently a 3 point favorite after opening at -2.5. USC was 5-3 ATS as the fav and FSU was just 1-2 as the dog. And in the last five games USC was 3-2 ATS with FSU going 2-3 ATS.

The Sweatpants Verdict:
We have two pretty similar teams here, so I think this is going to be a very good game. I think it's going to come down to which team makes the fewer mistakes in the passing game and with the status of Ponder up in the air, I think you have to go with South Carolina here. Spurrier will use a healthy dose of Latimore to loosen up the D for a few big Garcia to Jeffery's pass plays. So I'm taking South Carolina to win and cover.
