PS Bowl-A-Thon 2010: Hyundai Sun Bowl

Hyundai Sun Bowl

The Where and When:
December 31st, 2:00 p.m. est, Sun Bowl, EL PASO, TX CBS.

The Who:
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (7-5) vs Miami Hurricanes (7-5, 5-3 ACC)

The Why:
The Irish are back in a bowl game after a year off. They finished second among the independents and this marks their 30th bowl all time.

Miami, clearly was disappointed with the season finishing 4th in the ACC. And they showed it by firing head coach Randy Shannon. This is the Cane's third straight bowl appearance and it's 36th all time.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Notre Dame under first year head coach Brian Kelly was learning and injured. They lost their starting QB, RB and TE and still managed to be the 63rd ranked total offense. Just 73rd in scoring they pass (29th) much more than run (97th). Defensively they've been pretty solid. They are 44th in total D, 29th in scoring, 56th rush and 41st pass defense.

Miami, statistically has been good. The 31st total offense is putting up 27.1 ppg (58th). The offense is run first with the 26th ranked attack, but can pass effectively as well (48th). Defensively they are pretty solid. Ranking 16th in total D, they are 21st in scoring. They are great against the pass as the 2nd ranked defense, but oddly have a hard time stopping the run at 81st.

Both teams were under .500 against winning teams with the Irish going 4-5 and The U going 3-4. Similarly they were just above .500 against AQ schools at 4-3 and 6-5 respectively. Only down the stretch did they differ with ND going 3-2 and Miami going 2-3.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
Well Hurricanes aren't very fun. And Irish people drink a lot. I do love Rudy though. And Miami was also mean to their nice coach. Go fighting Rudies!

Vegas Edge
Miami is currently a 2.5 point fav. But they've been bad ATS going 4-7. Notre Dame on the other hand was ok ATS at 5-4. And Miami was just 4-5 ATS as the fav and ND was 3-2 ATS as the Dog.

The Sweatpants Verdict:
Firing Shannon I think was a mistake and I think it will effect this Miami team. Plus I think down the stretch Kelly had a chance to get his young guys stepping in a running the offense well enough to dispatch Miami. Harris is very turn over prone and that will be a factor. Notre Dame in the upset.
