PS Bowl-A-Thon 2010: New Era Pinstripe Bowl

New Era Pinstripe Bowl

The Where and When:
December 30th, 3:20 p.m. est, Yankee Stadium, BRONX, NY ESPN/ESPN3.

The Who:
Kansas State Wildcats (7-5, 3-5 Big 12) vs Syracuse Orange (7-5, 4-3 Big East)

The Why:
K State welcomed back legendary coach Bill Snyder and with it a winning season, 7th place in the Big 12 and it's first bowl birth since 2006.

Syracuse has risen from the GERG ashes this season finishing 4th in the Big East and securing it's first bowl game since 2004.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
K State isn't the most potent offense out there, but they will run the ball and score. Averaging 33.6 ppg (25th) they are the 20th best rushing attack nationally. Only 62nd in total offense their 97th passing offense drags them down a bit. And it's not like they're relying on a stellar defense. As a matter of fact, they're not good defensively at all. The 106th, 73rd, 118th and 52nd ranked total, scoring, running and passing defense isn't the Wildcats' strong suit.

Syracuse makes me want to bash my face into a spiky rock. After Michigan hired GERG, Scott Shafer (who Michigan fired) took over for the Orange. Well two years later, Michigan has the worse defense in it's history and Syracuse is 5th in total defense, 13th in scoring defense, 42nd against the run and 4th against the pass. Offensively, well different story. The 106th ranked total offense is only the 99th scoring offense. They don't really run the ball (88th) or pass (91st) very well.

Neither team was particularly successful against winning teams with K State going 1-4 and Cuse going 2-4. And both were the same against AQ schools and to close the season at 4-5 and 2-3.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
It's kind of funny that K State is in Manhattan, KS, the Little Apple. It's almost like an all NY game, sort of. I don't know what a wildcat is, but I certainly have no clue why a mascot would be a fruit? I mean Orange? Why not a cool fruit like The fighting Pineapples or something. Just dumb. Wildcats all the way.

Vegas Edge
The Orange are 1 point favorites in this one. If you consider this a home game for them, that's not good as they are 0-3 ATS as the home fav. And the Wildcats are 2-0 ATS as the away dog. K State was a game better ATS than the Orange. One thing that does look good is the under at 47.5. This thing could be a 17 - 9 game.

The Sweatpants Verdict:
With a one point spread it's hard to say where I'd go. Neither of these teams has been consistent. I think K State will be able to run on Syracuse, but I think they'll have a few costly turnovers that will be the difference in the game. I'm taking Syracuse and their defense to cover.
