PS Bowl-A-Thon 2010: Allstate Sugar Bowl

Allstate Sugar Bowl

Finally a campaign worth enjoying. This is my favorite of the bunch.

The Where and When:
January 4th, 8:30 p.m. est, Superdome, NEW ORLEANS, LA ESPN/ESPN3.

The Who:
#6 Ohio State Buckeyes (11-1, 7-1 Big 10) vs #8 Arkansas Razorbacks (10-2, 6-2 SEC)

The Why:
TOSU was the third team in the Big Ten champion three-way this year and received an at-large BCS bid. This marks the Buckeyes 41st bowl game all time and sixth straight BCS game.

Arkansas was an early national championship contender but fell twice and finished 3rd in the SEC. This will mark their 38th bowl all time.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Ohio State was arguable the best team in the Big Ten this season. The 21st ranked total offense is 11th in scoring putting up 39.4 ppg. They will run the ball with success (14th) and pass when they need to with the 55th ranked attack. Defensively they are very good. The 2nd ranked total defense is 4th in scoring, rush and pass defense.

Arkansas has adapted well to Bobby Petrino's system. The 10th total offense is scoring 37.3 ppg good for 15th nationally. They rely heavily on the pass which is ranked 3rd in the nation, but can run the ball to balance things out (64th). They are fairly average defensively. The 33rd ranked total defense is giving up 22.8 ppg (42nd). They are ok against the run at 67th but good against the pass at 16th.

Both teams had success against winning squads. TOSU went 5-1 and Arkansas went 4-2. The Buckeyes lost to the only ranked team it faced, where each winning team the Hogs faces was ranked. Both where solid down the stretch going 5-0.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
Pigs are really gross. Unless it's that pig from Charlotte's Web, he was nice. But I don't think that's who they had in mind. But I did see that sweater vests are making a comeback so I think I like Ohio State.

Vegas Edge
The Buckeyes are 3.5 point favs in this one. Both teams were successful ATS going 9-2 on the year. TOSU was favored in every game this season, where the Hogs went 3-1 ATS as the dog.

The Sweatpants Verdict:
Looking at what has taken place thus far it's hard to think that Ohio State has much of a chance in this game. The SEC West has proven that it's the best conference in the nation and the Big Ten...well. As good as TOSU's defense is, I think that Arkansas offense will be too much for them. And with all the future retail salesmen on the Buckeyes squad, who knows what state of mind they will be in. I'm taking Arkansas and the upset.
