PS Bowl-A-Thon 2010: BBVA Compass Bowl

BBVA Compass Bowl

Miss you big guy! You know there's an opening in Ann Arbor. We know the Stache is big enough for that task.

The Where and When:
January 8th, 12:00 p.m. est, Legion Field, BIRMINGHAM, AL, ESPN/ESPN3.

The Who:
Pittsburgh Panthers (7-5, 5-2 Big East) vs Kentucky Wildcats (6-6, 2-6 SEC)

The Why:
Pitt had a shot at the Big East title but fell short and finished 3rd. They will be appearing in their 3rd straight bowl game and 27th all time.

Kentucky finished 10th in the SEC to reach it's 15th all time bowl game. This also marks the 5th straight bowl game for the Wildcats.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Pittsburgh is an average team with a slightly above average defense. Ranked 72nd in total offense they put up 26.3 ppg (69th). They are 56th in rushing and 69th in passing. Defensively it's better story. The 11th ranked total defense is 22nd in scoring allowing just 19.8 ppg. They are 17th against both the run and pass.

Kentucky is actually a pretty decent offensive team. The 26th ranked total offense is scoring 33 ppg (27th). They are led by the 21st ranked passing attack and are successful on the ground at 47th. Defensively they are okay. Despite being the 47th ranked total defense they are 73rd in points allowed at 28.5 ppg. They are the 80th ranked rush defense and good against the pass at 18th.

Pitt went 2-0 verse winning teams where Kentucky was just 2-3. Kentucky also had a losing record against AQ schools finishing 3-6. The Panthers finished 5-4 against AQ schools. To finish, Pitt went 3-2 and Kentucky went 2-3.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
CAT FIGHT!! This is a good one. Panthers are kinda bad ass. But wildcats are...wild. I think I like panthers better though, cause they are more exotic. Go Panthers!

Vegas Edge
Pitt is the fav in this contest at -4. Which is good for Pitt fans because they are 6-2 ATS as the favorite. Where Kentucky was 2-5 ATS as the dog. Kentucky has the surface advantage going 6-6 ATS on grass as Pitt only played once on grass and lost ATS.

The Sweatpants Verdict:
As bad as the Big East was this year, I just don't think the 10th place team in the SEC is going to topple the 3rd place team in the Big East. This is a weird match up. Despite not having the Wanstache prowling the sidelines with hair metal humming in his headset, I think Pitt is the better team here. I don't think the Panther D locks down the Wildcats, but it does enough to win and cover.
