PS Bowl-A-Thon 2010: Discover Orange Bowl

Discover Orange Bowl

I wonder if Peggy will make an appearance.

The Where and When:
January 3rd, 8:30 p.m. est, Sun Life Stadium, MIAMI, FL ESPN/ESPN3.

The Who:
#4 Stanford Cardinal (11-1, 8-1 Pac 10) vs #13 Virginia Tech Hokies (11-2, 8-0 ACC)

The Why:
The Cardinal have had quite a turn around under Jim Harbaugh, finishing second in the Pac 10 and only losing to #2 Oregon. This marks Stanford's 22nd bowl game and their second in as many years.

After starting the season with one bad and one horrible loss, the Hokies rebounded to sail through the ACC and take home the conference title. This marks their 24th bowl and 18th in a row.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Stanford is a very good team. Had they not run into the buzz saw that is Oregon, they would likely be in the Championship game right now. The are the 14th ranked total offense and the 9th ranked scoring O, putting up 40.3 ppg. They are really a balanced team as the 17th rush and 30th pass offense. Defensively they are equally as solid. The 23rd total defense is only allowing 17.8 ppg, which is good for 9th nationally. They are the 24th rush and 33rd pass defense.

Va Tech is a typical Va Tech team. The 37th ranked total offense puts up 35.5 ppg (18th). They are a lot better rushing at 18th than passing at just 74th. Defensively they are good, but not quite as solid as The Cardinal. The 38th, 16th, 58th and 31st ranked total, scoring, rush and passing offense is allowing just 19.1 ppg.

Stanford was a good 3-1 against winning teams, where Va Tech faced two more and finished 5-1. Stanford faced only one ranked team and fell, where Va Tech was 1-1. Both finished strong at 5-0.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
It's bird fight. Well I think it is anyway, cause the Virginia team has a turkey for a mascot. But wait why is Stanford's a tree? Aren't they the Cardinals? I'm confused. I love thanksgiving, but Christmas trees are great too. Oh I don't know. Stanford is for smart kids. I don't like smart kids. Go Virginia!

Vegas Edge
Stanford is a 3 point fav entering the game. They are 7-3 ATS as the favorite. The Hokies haven't been the dog all season and finished the year 10-2 ATS.

The Sweatpants Verdict:
This is probably the BCS game I'm looking forward to the most. Two pretty complete teams that are going to hit and play hard. Both coaches are pretty hard-nosed guys. Harbaugh's name has been swirling around for coaching gigs this entire bowl season, not sure how the Stanford kids are handling that. We'll see. Regardless, I think that Va Tech has been undervalued every since that JMU loss early. I like the edge on special teams and the mobility of Taylor at QB. I think the Hokies pull off the upset.
