PS Bowl-A-Thon 2010: Progressive Gator Bowl

Progressive Gator Bowl

Get your European Shoulder Bag ready!

The Where and When:
January 1st, 1:30 p.m. est, Everbank Field, JACKSONVILLE, FL ESPN2/ESPN3.

The Who:
Mississippi State Bulldogs (8-4, 4-4 SEC) vs Michigan Wolverines (7-5, 3-5 Big Ten)

The Why:
Mississippi State finished 7th in the SEC and is in it's first bowl game since 2007. This marks the schools 15th bowl game all time

Michigan finds itself back in a bowl game after a two year hiatus and finishing 7th in the Big Ten. This will mark the Wolverines 40th bowl game all time.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
MSU is a decent offense. Ranking 46th in total offense they are 58th in scoring posting 27.1 ppg. They are far more successful with the run at 16th than the pass (92nd). Defensively they were solid all year. The 53rd total defense is also the 26th ranked scoring defense at 20.3 ppg. They excel in stopping the run at 19th but are susceptible to the pass at 90th.

Michigan is more like a Sun Belt team than a Big Ten squad. The 6th ranked total offense is putting up 34.3 ppg (21st). They will run the ball very well (11th) and burn you with the pass (35th). Now on to the Sun Belt part. Defensively they are dreadful. The 107th ranked total defense allows 33.8 ppg (101st). They are slightly better against the run at 94th than the pass (111th).

Neither school was good against winning teams with MSU going 1-4 and Michigan going 2-5. Against AQ schools MSU was an even 4-4. Michigan was just 1-3 verse ranked opponents. Down the stretch MSU was better at 3-2 to UM's 2-3.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
Bulldogs vs Wolverines. I LOVE HUGH JACKMAN! That is all. Michigan!

Vegas Edge
The Bulldogs are 5 point favs in this one. And they were decent against the spread going 6-5. Michigan was bad ATS going just 3-8. As the favorite MSU was 4-1 and Michigan was 1-3 as a dog. In the last 5 games UM was 0-5 ATS

The Sweatpants Verdict:
Everything points to a Bulldog victory. They are better defensively, the survived the brutal SEC West and are the favorites. But honestly I'm a huge homer, so I'm picking Michigan. GO BLUE!
