PS Bowl-A-Thon 2011: Gildan New Mexico Bowl

Well it's certainly a part of our life, whether we like it or not.

The Where and When:
Saturday, December 17th, 2:00 pm ET, University Stadium, Albuquerque, NM. ESPN/ESPN3

The Who:
Temple Owls (8-4, 5-3 MAC) vs Wyoming Cowboys (8-4, 5-2 MWC)

The Why:
Temple, under new head coach Steve Addazio, are heading to their second bowl in three years and the fourth overall. The Owls finished fifth in the MAC and second in the MAC East.

Wyoming is also playing in it's second bowl game in three years. This marks their second trip to the New Mexico Bowl. It's lucky number 13 for the Cowboys in bowls games where they are 6-6. Wyoming finds its way to NM by finishing third in the Mountain West.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Temple is very much an old school football team: Play good defense and run the football. Somehow they are the 3rd ranked scoring defense in the nation. And that is playing in the MAC, where points are handed out like credit cards. They don't give up a ton of yards either, coming in at 15th. They are better against the pass (19th) than the run (26th) but all in all pretty tough. Offensively they run. They are the 7th ranked rushing offense and 117th in passing. That averages out to 67th overall and 45th in scoring. They'll grind the ball and stop you on defense.

Wyoming relies on their offense to score in order to win. They are 60th in score and 46th overall. They rush better at 32nd than they pass 73rd. And weirdly they average 27 ppg while giving up the same amount. Which part of their problem. They're the 66th scoring D and 78th overall. At 35 passing they are good, but I suspect that has more to do with the 115th ranked rush defense.

Both teams beat up on non ranked opponents going 8-3 and  8-1 respectively. Wyoming was better and faced more winning teams going 2-4 verse 0-3 for Temple. And they are identical against non-AQ schools at 6-3. Each finished 3-2 down the stretch with Temple winning it's final three games.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
I loved the Cosby Show and Bill Cosby went to Temple. Plus Wyoming is gross.

Vegas Edge:
The line opened at Temple -6 and has moved to -7 since. The over is at 50. Temple is 7-4 ATS and Wyoming 6-4 ATS, not much of an edge there. Wyoming is 5-2 as a dog and Temple is 5-4 as the favorite.

The Sweatpants Verdict:
Initially I picked Wyoming in this game. They've played more winning teams and they had the tougher schedule. But, after diving in a bit, I think Temple's D will be too much. The glaring thing for me is the 7th ranked Temple run game vs the 115th ranked rush D. That plays right into Temples hands. I think Temple takes it and covers. Temple 27 - 17.
