PS Bowl-A-Thon 2011: Hyundai Sun Bowl

I hope this game is better than this commercial.

The Where and When:
78th Hyundai Sun Bowl, El Paso, TX – December 31th, 11:00 a.m. – CBS

The Who:
Georgia Tech University Yellow Jackets (8-4, 5-3 ACC) versus University of Utah Utes (7-5, 4-5 PAC 12)

The Why:
This is a conference tie-in game for both the ACC and the PAC 12. Once again the ACC does a stellar job of getting good bowl matchups by putting a team with a winning conference record up against a loser from the PAC 12 (I hope you can feel the sarcasm). At some point the ACC needs to revisit their bowl matchups and get better matchups. Currently the ACC has no tie-in games against the Big 10 and what makes a fan base happier than picking on a big slow team from up north during the holidays.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
This game is all about what happens with the Yellow Jacket running game. Georgia Tech is ranked 3rd nationally in rushing offense and Utah is ranked 7th nationally in rushing defense. This is the matchup to watch, if Utah can slow down the Yellow Jacket running game then they will have a shot in this game. However, I am not completely sold on Utah’s run defense, does anyone in the PAC 12 actually have a decent running attack other than Oregon?

The one statistic that has been paying off this bowl season is turnover margin. Utah ranks 14th nationally, with their defense causing 32 turnovers this season. If the Utes can cause a couple of well timed turnovers then this could be a competitive game.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
I actually took Utah is this game with an 18 confidence factor. After looking at the statistics I am starting to think I may have made a mistake on this one. Although, the one thing going for my pick is that Georgia Tech has lost their last six bowl games. It seems that when teams have the extra time to get ready for the Yellow Jacket running attack they are able to shut it down.

Vegas Edge:
Georgia Tech is favored by 2 and half points and over/under is 49 and a half. If I was going to play this game I think that the under may be a good bet, with both of these teams having inept passing attacks and both have serviceable defenses.

Sweatpants Verdict:
I am going to go with recent history and look for Utah to send the Yellow Jackets home for the 7th straight bowl trip a loser.
