Hawks, Clones, Bulldog, Tigers, Oh my!

The election really gets in the way of my football writing. Only 60 days left though. So here's an abbreviated version of what's to come.

Last week:
Straight up: 5-0.
ATS: 2-3

GAME OF THE WEEK: #24 Florida at Texas AM (Saturday, 2:30 p.m. ESPN)
Welcome to the SEC.

Aggies are at home and excited for their first SEC game. Kevin Sumlin's team opens with its new offense as well.

Florida for its part starts Sophomore QB Jeff Driskell for his first state. If you like turnovers, you’ll like this game.

The Line: Florida a 1.5 point favorite.

The Pick: You make the most progress between week1 and week 2. Therefore, lets go with the team that’s played already. Florida 17 Texas AM 7.

Iowa State at Iowa. (Saturday, 2:30 p.m., BTN)
Unlike McCoy, I put my pom-poms away for this one. Hopefully Mr. Cyclown will also ditch the cardinal and gold glasses at some point. C’mon man!

Iowa State has everything going for it. Steele Jantz ran over Iowa last year and looked like a Heisman hopeful. Iowa looked awful vs Northern Illinois in all phases last week.

Paul Rhoads always gets his team up for this. And this is the Cyclone bowl game. Iowa on the other hand could care less; it’s just a game in pursuit of a bowl.

Everyone and their brother is on the Clone wagon. Easy pick, right?

Not so fast. Iowa plays best when everyone is down on them. The game is at Kinnick and the Hawkeyes have stewed all week, while the Cyclones think they’ve already won.

The Hawks have them right where they want them.

The Line: Opened at 6.5 and now down to Iowa by 3.5.

The Pick: Ugly football game. Iowa 17 Iowa State 15.

Georgia at Mizzou. (Saturday, 6:45 p.m. ESPNU)
The opening of SEC play for Missouri, as though you could get away from hearing about it here in ol KC. I really think that this is a game that has been blown out of proportion. One radio guy called it the biggest Mizzou home game ever. Folks, it’s just a conference opener.

Mizzou bulletin board comments about old man football were not helpful. I’m concerned that they are too jacked up for this game and will crash by the second quarter. But hey, it’s at home and the crowd will be raucous.

Georgia is a solid football team. Good balanced attack. Plenty of talent. I think they normally win this game in Columbia, but I’ll take the emotion of the Tigers on this one.

The Line: Mizzou by 2.5
The Pick: Mizzou 31 Georgia 27.

And that is all I have time for this week. See you right back here next week.
