Quick Buck Friday?

Yes, Quick Buck Thursday is now Quick Buck Friday. Why? Well, we had too much shit going up on Thursday. Plus, it gives us an extra day to see if the lines move favorably.

As you'll remember we were each given 20 "units" to start the season. the units are there to track our progress throughout the season and allows us to put emphasis on a game we really like. Each week we'll recap the standings based on the previous week before getting into our picks for the current week.

NV Nole - 25 units
SEC Guy - 18 units*
Drake - 16 units
McCoy - 15 units
*In a late, unpublished pick, SEC Guy took Cal -11. You didn't think I was going to let that one go now did you?.

Week 2
Drake's pick:

Indiana -14 @ UMASS - 5 units
Okay, last week flat out sucked. I fell right into the trap I was in all last year: trying to be too cute. Well, screw that. Instead of picking good teams early, I'm going with the bet against bad teams early approach.

UMASS is an FCS team making the transition to FBS. You may see them a few more times in this space. Anyway, their home games aren't really home games, so that advantage is out the window. They managed 3 first downs last week. Indiana is at least as good at UConn. This should be an easy cover for the Hoosiers.

NV Nole's pick:

North Carolina -10.5 @ Wake Forest Demon Deacons - 5 units
Tar Heel Head Coach Larry Fedora has his work cut out for him trying to motivate a team that is not eligible for post season play. However, last week North Carolina came out and took care of business against lowly Elon (62-0). The one take away from this game is that North Carolina did what good teams are expected to do and bury an inferior opponent early. Wake Forest on the other hand had difficulty putting away Liberty (20-17). Unlike my previous pick, where I discounted a rough week one, I think this may be the beginning of the end of the Little Engine That Could in upstart Wake Forest. Week 2 rarely offers few stats that define a matchup, so in this one I am going to go with college football guru Phil Steele’s prognostication for each team. He has the Tar Heels slated to win double digit games this season with a 12-0 record not out of the question. On the other hand he has the Demon Deacons staying home during bowl season. I will give the points and take the Heels.

SEC Guy's pick:

Wisconsin/Oregon State (+7) - 10 units (am I the only who laughs at "units"?)
As our moderator pointed out, I made an ill advised call on Cal last week - after numerous harassing calls and texts to pick somebody I rushed to judgement. I'm not going to use my kid as an excuse so I'll use my wife who is 9 months pregnant. I had other things on my mind. But, our task-master, I mean awesome host, had to have a game.

Anyway, here in SEC country, the last thing we do is make excuses - namely because all we do is win. And when is the last time anyone had to have an excuse for winning? Other than Charlie Sheen?

That said, look out for Wisconsin. Last week they were playing it close to the vest, breaking in a new quarterback and like 97 new assistants, so they were a little rusty. I don't think Bielema has any mercy on an Oregon State team that isn't as talented, Montee Ball gets 150+ and 'Scony rolls on the road. The Badgers are laying 7 on the road (although the line started at 11 so apparently everyone is over-estimating Oregon State) but I think this one is over by halftime. Take Wisconsin, and thank me later. Badgers dominate and roll 38-14.

Vegas CyClown's pick:

Iowa State/Iowa (-4) - 15 units (I also laugh at "unit")
This week, I am putting my unit where my mouth is. Wait...

I don't need to spend a lot of time telling you why I am picking this. The Cyclones are dogs on the road to a team they can't stand. They are the better team. They are believers. They are winners. Cyclones win. You can bet on it.
