Lazy Man's Michigan Preview: Purdue

I believe this is posted in Morgan Burke's office.

I hope you all enjoyed Wife Day last week, because it's B1G season time!!! Michigan opens up conference play on the road in West Lafayette, IN. Let's not dilly dally and get to it!

Michigan Wolverines (2-2, 0-0 B1G) @ Purdue Boilermakers (3-1, 0-0 B1G)
Saturday 10/6, Ross-Ade Stadium, 4:00 ET  Big Ten Network

Well, what is there to say other than, don't turn the damn ball over Denard! Purdue appears to have a decent run defense ranking 22nd in the nation. They are led by a productive front that is averaging 6.75 tackles for loss on the year and anchored by the impressive Kawaan Short. That said, they couldn't stop Marshall and Notre Dame's anemic offense put up 20, so who knows. Regardless, I have a feeling we are going to see the road-grating offense we saw in the second half of the Notre Dame game. If the offensive line can come out firing off the ball and moving people, Fitz and Denard can get it going on the ground. This is going to be critical so the pressure can be off the passing game. If they can run early, Borgess can relax and give Denard some easy reads. Don't be surprised though if we see Borgess open up with consecutive pass plays in this game. The game is a chess match to him and that would be unexpected.

Notre Dame was the only real defense Purdue faced all year and that resulted in 13 points. I can't see a performance much different from Purdue against Mattison and the boys. The key is going to be effectively stopping the run. If the D-line can disrupt the run game and the backers are staying home, the Boilers will have to turn to TerBush (because I don't think Marve is ready) and that means nothing but rainbows for the Michigan secondary.

Special Teams
Let's see it Dennis! I'm not giving you Norfleet anymore until I see you break one. You will remain Dennis, until this happens.

Is that fair to a true Freshman? No. Am I going to reconsider then? No. Now, run one back dammit!

The Prediction
If Michigan comes out and dominates the line of scrimmage against Notre Dame from the git-go, they win that game with ease. I have a feeling they do that in this game. The defense will continue playing at a high level and will effectively shut down the Purdue offense.

I am oddly calm about this game. Michigan is better in all the adjusted statistical categories. The predictions machines have them even and Vegas has UM as a 3 point road favorite. I don't get it really. I just don't see these two teams as even, I don't. I think Denard bounces back, we see Fitz have his best game of the year and the defense locks them down accept for one fluke Purduey play. Michigan 27 - 17.

Let's see what the rest of Michigan Blogdom has to say:
