PS Bowl-A-Thon 2012: Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl

Goose and Maverick will sign autographs before Air Force/Rice.
The When/Where:
Saturday, December 29th at 11:45 a.m. EST. Fort Worth, Texas. ESPN.
The Who:
Rice Owls (6-6, 4-4 CUSA) vs. Air Force Falcons (6-6, 5-3 MWC)

The Why:
After two years in Dallas, the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl returns to Fort Worth, Texas. The matchup traditionally tries to feature a military academy. Enter the Air Force Falcons of the Mountain West Conference. Air Force lost three to close the year. Included in that disaster were losses to Army and San Diego State. They have 6 wins and what they hey…those kids are fighting for our freedom.

Their opponent is the Rice Owls. The Owls started the year 2-6, but got four straight wins to become bowl eligible. Rice picked up a big win in Lawrence, Kansas early in the year, but could not parlay that in to conference success.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
If you like run-first football, you’ll love this game. The two teams are a mirror image of one another both score 31 ppg and give up 28 ppg.

Air Force is the second ranked rushing offense in the nation with 328 yards on the ground. Senior RB Cory Getz is averaging over 6 yard per carry. QB Connor Dietz will also keep the ball. It’s very rare they throw the ball, they are happy to be one-dimensional.

Rice is a little more balanced with 200 yards pg on the ground and over 200 yards in the air. The Owls are one of the youngest teams in the NCAA. The Rice run defense gives up 193 yards per game on the ground.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
C’mon. It’s the Armed Forces Bowl. The Air Force is an armed force. Rice is an elite institution with only 3,000 students. If the Air Force Academy doesn’t win this bowl, there should be a Congressional investigation.

The Vegas Edge:
Air Force is a 1.5 favorite. Over/Under is 61.5
The Sweatpants Verdict:
Air Force runs a veer option offense which I love. Old School. Rice is more apt to throw, but also runs. The fact that neither is going to stop the other makes this good TV. There is no doubt though, that Rice is hot and excited to be here. That motivation could be the difference in this game. UPSET ALERT!

Rice  31 Air Force 30.
