PS Bowl-A-Thon 2012: Gildan New Mexico Bowl

PS Bowl-A-Thon 2012: Gildan New Mexico Bowl

Yes America, There is a New Mexico. This game has served as a reminder for Americans every year since 2006.

The When/Where:
Saturday, December 15th at 1 p.m. EST. Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Who:
Nevada Wolf Pack (7-5, 4-4 MWC) vs. Arizona Wildcats (7-5, 4-5 Pac-12)

The Why:
This is the only nationally-televised annual event in the Land of Enchantment. And that’s a shame. Beautiful state. Plus there’s a bona fide UFO museum just up the road in Roswell. Arizona was selected as the PAC-12’s seventh team and Nevada is the fifth and final team picked from the Mountain West.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Rich Rodriquez has installed his spread-attack and the Wildcats rank seventh nationally in offense. They’ve also bought into RichRod’s defensive style resulting in giving up 34 ppg, good enough for 103rd nationally.

The Wolf Pack (it’s two words people) are a good, balanced offense. They light up their side of the scoreboard with 37 ppg and the other team’s side too by giving up 32 ppg. This is Nevada’s second trip to Albuquerque this year, with a 31-24 win over New Mexico just four weeks ago.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
Hmm…I did work on races in both Tucson and Reno this past year, but I only actually set foot in Tucson. Wonderful town. They have rocks for lawns. Imagine Tombstone, but with less horses and more people. Oh, and no Cowboys.

Tucson is much closer to Albuquerque, the state capital of New Mexico, but Reno folks have already made the trip once this year. Their entertainment learning curve will be less, already knowing where the good buffet is and how to dress smartly.

The Vegas Edge:
Most books have Arizona by 9.5 points. The over/under here is 76.5 in recognition of the fact that neither team can probably stop the other. The spread could be a Pac-12 bias or, it could be because Nevada has lost 4 of its last 5.
The Sweatpants Verdict:
Zona is the BCS conference team here, but Nevada beat Pac-12 member, Cal, earlier this season. This sets up as a track meet and I’m hopeful one of those games where the last team with the ball wins. What else are you going to do on a Saturday before Christmas? Shop? Settle in, this will be a good one.

Arizona 38 Nevada 31.
