PS Bowl-A-Thon 2012: Heart of Dallas Bowl

Willie Nelson…Clearly a Purdue fan

The When/Where:
Tuesday, January 1st at Noon EST. Cotton Bowl, Dallas. ESPNU.

The Who:
Purdue Boilermakers (6-6, 3-5 Big 10) vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys (7-5, 5-4 Big 12)

The Why:
This game replaced the Cotton Bowl. Oh sure, there is still a Cotton Bowl, but its not played at the Cotton Bowl. Instead we have a bowl game that features more of the blood feud between the Big 10 and Big 12. The Big 10 true to form is 0-2 in this game.

Purdue won the final three games of the year to become bowl eligible. That would be more impressive if the opponents had not been Iowa, Illinois and Indiana.

Oklahoma and Baylor both upended the Cowboys in their final two games. Oklahoma State though did avenge its loss to Iowa State from a year ago. So I’m sure that totally made this season worth it.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Oklahoma State is going to throw the football. In a nod to system football, the pokes have had three different quarterbacks this year. Junior, Clint Chelf will start the game. OSU averages 333 yards through the air and nearly 45 ppg. Defense? Well they don’t really play it.  They’ve given up more than 40 points in 5 games this year, including the final two.

Purdue is not the basketball-on-grass football team you remember. Robert Marve has thrown for 1,500 yards and 13 TDs this year. He’s only been in about 2/3rds of their games though. Receivers coach Patrick Higgins is the interim Coach. Purdue scored and gave up 29 ppg.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
Mike “I’m a man” Gundy versus the Receivers coach.

Plus Cowboys in Dallas…how do you vote against that? They’ve outlawed Boilermaker shots in Texas- not because of Purdue, but as an anti-union measure.

The Vegas Edge:
OSU by 16.5 Over/Under is 70.

The Sweatpants Verdict:
OSU is decidedly not excited about this game. Purdue is just playing it out until a new coach in 2013. This will be like the pro bowl. No defense, just offensive show boating.

OSU 41 Purdue 35.
