PS Bowl-A-Thon 2012: Holiday Bowl

Jack Taylor has nothing on the Bears and the Bruins.
The When/Where:
Thursday, December 27th at 9:45 p.m. EST. San Diego. ESPN.

The Who:
Baylor Bears (7-5, 4-5 Big 12) vs. #17 UCLA Bruins (9-4, 6-3 PAC12)

The Why:
Baylor won its last three, including wins over both Kansas State and Oklahoma State, to finish fifth in the Big 12, locking up an invitation to the Holiday Bowl. In October, however, things were not so rosy for the bears. They endured a four game losing streak that included giving up 70, 49, 56 and 35 points in consecutive weeks. They won the final three by scoring 52, 52 and 41. If you can’t stop them, outscore them.

The UCLA Bruins had an interesting year. They rolled to a 9-2 record, beating Nebraska and cross-town rival USC. Then lost in consecutive weeks to Stanford and Stanford. Thank you PAC-12 schedulers. Hey at least UCLA brings a winning record into this bowl game. This is the PAC-12’s #3 bowl spot.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Baylor is the nation’s top-ranked offense and fifth in points scored. In a word, they are "lethal". Nick Florence may not be RG III, but he’s thrown for over 4100 yards and 31 touchdowns. The Bears have also given up 38 ppg. It’s a defense that is as awful as its offense is good. Last year the Bears won 67-56 over Washington in the Alamo Bowl.

UCLA is a poor man’s Baylor. They are 20th in total yards and average 35 ppg. The Bruins have Doak Walker finalist RB Johnathan Franklin, who is the school’s all-time rushing leader (4,369 yards). They’ve given up nearly 26 ppg and have a middling defense.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
This would also be a great College World Series game.  Bruins, as you may know, are actually smaller bears. Thus, the mascots may be telling us who is going to win. (Honestly, do you have a better way?) LA is closer to San Diego, but let’s be honest, UCLA fans aren’t going anywhere. They live in Southern California.

Waco was the site of the famous Karesh compound. But LA has more than enough of its own whackos.

The Vegas Edge:
Currently this is pick’em. Over/Under is 79.5
The Sweatpants Verdict:
Warm up the scoreboard. I’m not sure that either team is bringing their punter. Baylor is more used to these games, so I give them the edge.

Baylor 56 UCLA 54.
