PS Bowl-A-Thon 2012: Hyundai Sun Bowl

I love when the band is better than the football team

The When/Where:
Monday, December 31st at 2 p.m. EST. El Paso, TX. CBS.

The Who:
Southern California (7-5, 5-4 PAC-12) vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (6-7, 5-3 ACC)

The Why:
One of the oldest bowl games in the nation. Georgia Tech won the awful Coastal Division and then lost the ACC Championship game.  That was a week after they got blasted by Georgia 42-10. So here we are with a conference runner up with a losing record.

USC has lost 4 of the last 5. They could not derail Notre Dame in the finale. Matt Barkley may or may not play. This is the Trojans first bowl in two long seasons. I’m not sure they were hoping for El Paso.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Georgia Tech will bring its Option offense that is ranked 4th in rushing in the nation, rolling up 315 rushing ypg. They pile up over 34 ppg. When they do pass it, its, as they say in France, le brutal at 119th in passing.  The defense is really, really bad. They fired Al Groh mid-season and shockingly that didn't fix it. They are giving up nearly 30 ppg.

USC has no shortage of offensive weapons. Matt Barkley will likely be a top NFL draft pick. RB Silas Redd is an excellent back. WR Marqise Lee was a unanimous All-American selection. SC gives up 24 ppg. Barkley is highly questionable. I don’t know what that means. However, if he doesn't go, the keys will be turned over too Freshman Max Wittig who was serviceable against the Notre Dame defense. Georgia Tech’s defense is not Notre Dame's.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
So Paul Johnson is 0-4 in bowl games. A part of that is the ability of the defense to get ready for his option offense. Also Georgia Tech will soon be a member of the Big 10, I'm sure of it.

SC is loaded with talent, but I really don’t like Lane Kiffin. Also, Matt Cassel went to USC. Although he didn’t play. Its everything I hate, all put into one school.

The Vegas Edge:
USC by 9 Over/Under is 64

The Sweatpants Verdict:
I think who plays QB for USC is more important than its being reported. Wittig is good, but Barkley is a Senior who has a ton of experience. The Trojans probably have enough talent to overcome it. I’m not sure who has the motivation to win, which makes the 9-point spread silly.

USC 34 Georgia Tech 31.
