PS Bowl-A-Thon 2012: Military Bowl

George Patton will be giving the pep talk to the Spartans before the Military Bowl

The When/Where:
Thursday, December 27th at 3 p.m. EST. RFK Stadium, Washington. ESPN.

The Who:
#24 San Jose State Spartans (10-2, 5-1 WAC) vs. Bowling Green Falcons (8-4, 6-2 MAC)

The Why:
This was supposed to be the #8 ACC team versus Army. It’s not. Because of spending cuts in Washington, the Military Bowl couldn’t afford…oh for heaven’s sakes.  This is what the people want: MACtion versus WACtion.

Bowling Green rode the #9 scoring defense in the country to bowl eligibility. The Falcons started 1-3, but won 7 of the last 8 to get to Washington.

The Spartans played so well they lost their head coach to Colorado. With losses only to Stanford and WAC Champion Utah State, San Jose State finished second in the conference and here they are. The schedule hasn’t exactly been murder’s row, but, hey, Notre Dame is in the national championship, so soft schedules are in.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
San Jose State will throw the ball, not run it. The Spartans are 11th in passing and 104th in rushing offense. They average 35 ppg and give up only 21ppg. Spartan QB David Fales finished seventh in the nation in passing yards (3,798) and leads the WAC in touchdown passes (31).

Bowling Green doesn’t play your typical MACtion game. It had the top-ranked defensive unit in the MAC, giving up just over 15 ppg. Offensively, they are the 86th-ranked offense in the nation and only score 23 ppg. The Falcons counter with three year starter Matt Schliz who has 14 tds and 12 ints this year. Ouch.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
I have no history that I can make up about either school. I’m still not 100% sure where Bowling Green is located and San Jose State has had an awful football history for so long that it’s hard for me to not be excited for their fan base. Which brings me to question why they're called the Spartans? Really. This is San Jose. It’s the third largest city in California. Your colors are blue and yellow. Spartans? How about Conquistadors? Golden Boys, Dolphins…something more fitting than Spartans.

The Vegas Edge:

San Jose State by 7. Over/Under is 46.5
The Sweatpants Verdict:
Watch the weather here very closely. This ain’t San Jose. If it’s blowing with rain or snow the Spartans are not going to move the ball well against the mean Green. In that instance, I would take the points and the under.
If, for some reason, the forecast is wrong, then: San Jose State 27 Bowling Green 21.
