PS Bowl-A-Thon 2012: New Era Pinstripe Bowl

And that is why we have the Pinstripe Bowl. All hail The Boss (may he rest in peace)!

The When/Where:
New Era Pinstripe Bowl, Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY, December 29th, 2012, 3:15 pm ET, ESPN

The Who:
West Virginia Mountaineers (7-5, 4-5 Big XII) @ Syracuse Orange (7-5, 5-2 Big East)

The Why:
What is considered the Big XII worst bowl game, the "winners" that get to head to New York to play outdoors in December are typically the #4 Big East team and the #7 Big XII team. And this year was just about chalk. WVU finished 8th in it's first season in the Big XII and Syracuse finished fourth in the Big East. Congrats to both teams and their fans. Enjoy this.

Anyway, this marks the 'Eers 32nd bowl game where they have accumulated a 14-17 record. Where as this is just the 24th bowl for the Orange. They are a more respectable 13-9-1.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Who needs to run the ball? This is the new look college football. You know all about WVU's offense. It's potent and the 11th most efficient in the nation. They are the number 8, 48, 6 and 7 ranked total, rushing, passing and scoring offense. But did you know that Syracuse is right behind them at 15th in offensive efficiency? Me either. They are the 21st total, 53rd rushing, 21st passing and 60th scoring ranked offense in the nation. Who knew.

And what about the Defense. Cuse is average and WVU is terrible. Syracuse has an edge in raw stats: 51st, 48th, 65th and 52nd to 110th, 40th, 123rd and 116th in total, rush, pass and scoring. That is until you look at defensive efficiency where WVU has the edge at 71st to 94th. How that works is beyond me. Advanced stats man.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
I go back and forth with this one. I mean, I loved The Express. But I also loved We Are Marshall, where WVU was all nice to Mathew MacConaughey and Jack from Lost. I guess I take the mascots. I mean the Orange? Gotta go with the crazy mountain man.

The Vegas Edge:
The Mountaineers are a four point favorite in this one. Neither of these teams were good ATS, with WVU going 5-7 and Cuse going 6-6. Syracuse did finish 4-1. But these teams finished a combine 3-9 against winning teams. I think the over is the play here at 73. But keep an eye on the weather. If the snow is real bad, it could hamper scoring.

The Sweatpants Verdict:
This is promising to be a pretty entertaining game. Two good offenses just trading punches. I don't expect much from either defense in this one. So the thing I'm looking at is turn over margin. WVU has the edge at .5 on the year as Cuse went -.08. Now, there is a 70% chance of snow and I wonder what that will do to Geno Smith and the 'Eers offense? I still think that four points is too low for Holgo and the WVU offense. So take WVU and the over, sit back and enjoy the offensive fireworks.

WVU 45 - 39
