PS Bowl-A-Thon 2012: Russell Athletic Bowl

The Russell Athletic Bowl can lead to naps. You are fore-warned.

The When/Where:
Friday, December 28th at 5:30 p.m. EST. Orlando. ESPN.

The Who:
Rutgers Scarlett Knights (9-3, 5-2 Big East) vs. Virginia Tech Hokies (6-6, 4-4 ACC)

The Why:
The Russell Athletic Bowl is the newest name for those great bowls of yesteryear: Champs, Citrus, Mazda, MicronPC, Blockbuster. Whatever you do, don’t get rid of the bowl that has a new name every two years.

The Hokies of Virginia Tech are happy to be here…happy to be anywhere after barely qualifying. Earlier this year, the Hokies were ranked in the top 15. However they had to count their win over Austin Peay to get to 6. An OT win against Boston College and a win versus rival Virginia brings them to Orlando on a two game winning streak.

Rutgers comes in as the #2 Big East team. The Scarlett Knights dropped their final two games to Pittsburgh and Louisville and with it their chance to win the Big East outright. This is their 7th bowl in 8 years.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Former Head Coach and defensive guru Greg Schiano is gone, but the Rutgers defense lives on. The Rutgers defense ranks 4th in the country giving up just more than 14 ppg.  Unfortunately they are 102nd in total offense and rushing. Paging Ray Rice. Sophomore QB Gary Nova has thrown for 2,500 yards, 22 TDs, and 15 INTs.

The Hokies are average at really everything. They are 80th in ppg at 26.1 and 39th in points against giving up 23.9 ppg. QB Logan Thomas does it all. He leads the team in passing (2,783) and rushing (528). Frank Beamer’s group is no stranger to bowls, having appeared in 20 straight.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
Both these teams have to be disappointed. Rutgers was headed to a BCS game last month. VA Tech was ranked before barely making a bowl game.

Rutgers is headed to the Big Ten, so they should play awful in bowls from here on out. Virginia Tech has the worst color scheme in the nation. Also, a Hokie is apparently just a large turkey. Although its way past Thanksgiving.

The Vegas Edge:
Currently VA Tech is 2.5 favorite. Over/Under is 41.5. Yes, the 6-6 ACC team is a favorite over the co-champs of the Big East. I have no idea why that league isn't taken seriously in football.
The Sweatpants Verdict:
Low-scoring and boring. Its called Beamer ball for a reason.

Va Tech  17 - Rutgers 14
