PS Bowl-A-Thon 2012: Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl

SMU is going to need the Hawaii 5-0 to figure out how to stop Fresno State’s Derek Carr

The When/Where:
Monday, December 24th at 8 p.m. EST. Honolulu. ESPN.

The Who:
Fresno State Bulldogs (9-3, 7-1 MWC) vs. Southern Methodist Mustangs (6-6, 5-3 CUSA)

The Why:
Mele Kalikimaka is the Conference USA/Mountain West Conference way of saying Merry Christmas. Believe it or not, SMU is acting as the second team in Conference USA despite two other conference teams with better records. My guess is that June Jones coming home was too much of a box office draw for the attendance starved Hawaii Bowl. But still, would you go to a bowl game on Christmas Eve? Don’t sleep on the Mustangs, they did knock off conference champion Tulsa last time out.

The Bulldogs finished tied atop the Mountain West standings. They lost to Oregon, Boise St. and Tulsa. This team is a break or two away from being in an outright conference champion.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:

Fresno State by 12.5. Over/Under is 58.5
Fresno State has a good passing-game. They rank 12th in overall offense and have scored over 40 points per game. David’s little brother, Derek Carr, can light you up.

You may remember SMU QB Garrett Gilbert from the 2010 National Championship game, he came off the bench after Colt McCoy got hurt. He transferred from Austin to SMU. I don’t know why. A June Jones offense is going to throw the ball, but the Mustangs’ offense isn't really anything special.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
Well, I’m Methodist. Does that count? Funny how SMU has never been to Methodists, what Notre Dame is to Catholics or BYU is to Mormons or what FSU is to felons. I’m sure there are great reasons for that. Perhaps if the Pony Express hadn’t been given the death penalty it would be different, but I doubt it.
I got nothing on Fresno State. I loved when Pat Hill took over and the toughness he brought. They were giant killers.
The Vegas Edge:
The Sweatpants Verdict:
Mismatch. That’s what I see when I look at their records. I think it’s probably more than the line, but maybe June Jones has a trick for playing in Hawaii.

Fresno State 35 SMU 14.
