PS Bowl-A-Thon 2012: AT&T Cotton Bowl

1992, when the Cotton Bowl sort of mattered.

The When/Where:
AT&T Cotton Bowl, Jerry Jones Dome, Arlington, TX, January 4, 2012, 8:00 pm ET, FOX

The Who:
(9) Texas A&M Aggies (10-2, 6-2 SEC) @ (10) Oklahoma Sooners (10-2, 8-1 Big XII)

The Why:
The Cotton Bowl pits the #3 or #4 SEC team against the #2 Big XII team. We achieved the Big XII school, but the Aggies finished 6th in the SEC, but you know the drill: MNC, BCS, blah, blah, blah.

This is the Aggies 34th bowl game all time of which they have only won 14. They are somewhat of a Cotton Bowl regular as this is there 13th appearance in the bowl. but they have only gone 4-8. They are looking for their first Cotton Bowl victory since 1987.

Oklahoma enters it's 46th bowl game and second Cotton Bowl. They are an impressive 27-17-1 all time in bowl games.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Hello offense!

Both of these teams boast an impressive offensive squad. A&M brings the 3rd, 13th and 14th ranked total, rush and passing offense. They are putting up a silly 44.8 ppg, good for 4th nationally. The Sooners are no slouches either, but are more one-dimensional. The 10th, 59th and 4th ranked total, rush and passing offense scores 40.3 ppg, good for 10th nationally. We're looking at the second and fifth most efficient offenses in the country.

Does that mean the game will come down to defense? I doubt it. The Aggies are the 58th, 36th, 83rd and 28th ranked total, rush, pass and scoring defense. Where the Sooners are the 47th, 79th, 25th and 39th ranked total, rush, passing and scoring defense. I don't see either defense making too much noise.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
The Aggies have that cool dog. But the Sooners have that covered wagon. But you know the Oklahoma fight song is soooooooooo boring. There is like 5 word in the whole thing. I don't like that. Gig em!

The Vegas Edge:
In this old Big XII match up Vegas likes the Aggies by a field goal. The number that will see more action is the O/U that is set at 72.5. I don't think that's enough. Neither of these teams were quite reliable with the Aggies going 7-5 ATS and the Sooners 6-6. I don't see a lot of field goals in this one, so the three points is a mystery to me. But, like Vegas I think this game is a toss up.

The Sweatpants Verdict:
I love this match up. Probably my favorite of the bowl season. Johnny Football vs Big Game Bob and the Sooners. Everyone knows the struggles of Heisman winners in bowl games. So what to do? Well, I don't think Johnny Football has to win this thing. I think the Aggie running game and Ben Malena will steal the show. Yeah Johnny F (or is it H now?) is going to have a play or two, but I think FR RB Trey Williams could pop for a big play down the line. The Sooner can keep it close if Landry Jones can avoid big turn overs.

This should be a good one in the Jerry Dome. But I think A&M has the edge.

TAMU 42 - 38
