Lazy Man's Michigan Preview: Akron

Apparently hilarious if you are from Akron.

Akron Zips (1-1, 0-0 MAC) @ 11 Michigan Wolverines (2-0, 0-0 B1G)
Saturday 9/14, Noon ET, Michigan Stadium, BTN

It’s MAC snack #2 on this year’s schedule. Coming off the big game last week, could it be the classic “let down" game? With this staff, I don’t think so. This team is young enough and have made plenty of mistakes for the coaches to drill into them the need to be better. So the game will be played. Therefore we better look at the keys to the three phases of the game.

After some tough sledding last week, the offensive line should get back to dominating the line of scrimmage. The next three games are going to be growing time for the interior. The Zip defense gave up 33 points to James Madison. It would be nice to see a big dose of Derrick Green in this game. Unless Borges wants to work on some specifics, I expect the game plan to be quite conservative. I would like to see if Chesson can actually catch the ball though. So throw it to Chesson!

Dominate. That is about it. The front seven shouldn’t have much of a problem and therefore I don’t see the secondary getting tested. So far the defense has been good not allowing big plays and that should continue here. I don’t know how creative Mattison will get with his blitzes in this game. My guess is they'll get a lot of young guys minutes this week.

Special Teams
Let’s get Norfleet to break one this week. And no muffed punts, Mathew!

Well, look, Akron isn’t great. Bowden is in year two, but still has a long way to go. Michigan has been really good in preparing for every game. This isn’t 2007. I expect the Wolverines to go up big early, put on the cruise control and get the young guys some playing time. With that, I’ll throw out some predictions:
  •          Green and Fitz go over 100 yards
  •           Butt catches a TD
  •           Gardner plays a half
  •           Morris/Norfleet do their best Gardner/Gallon mind-meld impersonation
  •           Gordon gets an INT
  •           Defense records 3 sacks
Michigan wins 55 – 3

Normally we'd take a look at what the Michigan blogs preview, but it's 3:30 in the morning as I post this. So it may be a bit early. You know the list, go check them out.
