Sweatpants Lessons: Week 6

Nobody finishes like the Karate Kid.

Were You Born In A Barn?
"Close the damn door!" I used to hear that a lot as a kid. And some of teams need to learn that too. Northwestern, San Diego St, Penn St, Rutgers, Troy, Notre Dame and South Carolina all gave up 20 or more points in the fourth quarter to either lose or turn easy wins into close ones. I didn't watch all these games, but the lesson is play to win not play to not lose.

Let Me See That Again
Replay is making Refs worse. Maybe it's just because we, the viewer, can see so many angles in slow mo, but this is another week where a team (ISU) got jobbed by a bad call. Refs are not making calls or making calls based on replay. I am not sure if there is a fix for this. Maybe the make the replay official just a part of the crew, like the back judge. They can see replays on each play and make calls the crew might miss. Provided they can make them in time. And I'm all for it if it means less huddles.

O-fer Check-In
Nine teams are still vying for immortality. Temple, So Miss, New Mexico St, UMASS, Miami OH, WMU, Hawaii, Georgia St and UCONN. South Florida escaped a win-less season this week and looks to keep UConn there this week. Either UMASS or Miami OH are coming off the board as they square off this week. Western Mich gets Buffalo at home. Hawaii travels to an energized UNLV squad. Georgia State gets Troy. And poor Temple travels to Cincy. So Miss and NM State will spare their fan bases a loss this week as they are on byes.

Get Well Soon, Chuckie!
Utah State's Jr QB, Chuckie Keeton, tore his ACL and MCL in a loss to BYU on Friday ending his season. That means Utah St goes from MWC favorite to maybe winning one game the rest of the way (Hawaii). Unless Craig Harrison shows he can handle this team next week against Boise, I would look to move Utah St to the beat against column the rest of the way.

Basketball School My Hiney!
Indiana beat Penn State for the first time in schools history. I think this might be a corner turner for Indiana. They lost to a good Missouri team and a Navy team that's always hard to prepare for. They also beat a decent Bowling Green team. They will be their measuring stick this week in their first road game at Michigan State.

Quick Hits
  • Baylor is still my fav to win the Big XII.
  • Was Maryland overrated or is FSU a Bayloresque death machine?
  • UMASS will get their first FBS win this weekend.
  • Georgia and LSU won't have an under all season.
