PS Bowl-A-Thon 2013: Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

Ron Burgundy is predicting an Aztec win.

The When/Where:
Saturday, December 21st at 5:30 p.m. EST. Boise, ID.  ESPN

The Who:
San Diego State (7-5, 6-2 MWC) vs. Buffalo Bulls (8-4, 6-2 MAC)

The Why:
China is the world’s largest producer of Potatoes, but they don’t play football so it would make no sense to have a game there. Idaho is the largest producer of potatoes in the United States and they have a Blue football field. Wa-la.

The marketing genius that came up with a bowl game in Boise in December long ago was snatched up by Facebook, where he keeps changing my news feed. Nothing says congrats on a great football season like a trip to Boise…and the hospital for frostbite.

The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl matches a team from the Mountain West and the Mid-American Conference. 2013 is the first year of that arrangement and if this year’s scintillating matchup is any guide, boy howdy, add more seats to Bronco Stadium.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
The Aztecs started off 0-3 and won their way to Boise. Which probably makes them wish they had thrown a game, given that the temperature in San Diego is in the mid-60’s with a nice westerly breeze off the beach.

The Aztecs are 35th in the nation in total offense. QB Quinn Kaehler has had a fine year completing 60% of his passes, 17 TDs against 9 picks.  RB Adam Muema has had two straight years of 1,000 yards rushing. San Diego gives up 32 ppg on defense. I’m not sure they understand the concept of defense.

The Bulls also have a two-time 1,000 yard rusher in Braden Oliver. Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack was a Butkus Award finalist and is projected to be a first-round pick in next spring's NFL draft. The Bulls have NEVER won a bowl game. To be fair they have only been in one other December bowl since moving up to FBS 15 years ago. Its also the first time Buffalo has won 8 games.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
Chuck Long used to coach at San Diego State. Also it’s a school named after a whale’s vagina.

Then again, there is the rags to riches story of Buffalo winning its first bowl game ever. Think of the kids tearing down the goal posts. The parties in Buffalo would be amaze balls.

Oh, who am I kidding, I just don’t care. And you don’t either. Your only reading this because you are a degenerate gambler and you have to offset losing your tush on the New Mexico Bowl.

The Vegas Edge:
San Diego State is a point and a half favorite. However, when the line opened, Buffalo was a 2 and a half point favorite.  The over/under is 50.5. Just remember that SDSU doesn’t play defense.  Buffalo is 8-4 ATS and SDS is 6-6.

The Sweatpants Verdict:
I can’t. I cannot pick San Diego State to win a bowl game in Boise, Idaho in December. Also, they don’t play defense. I’m going to go against the betting tide and against history- Bulls win their first bowl game. Go Crazy kids, Go. Crazy.

Buffalo 31 San Diego State 28.
