PS Bowl-A-Thon 2013: R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl

Joe Montana's kid plays QB for Tulane. That's as good an excuse as we are going to get to replay the Catch.

The When/Where:
Saturday, December 21st at 9 p.m. EST. New Orleans, LA.  ESPN

The Who:
Tulane Green Wave (7-5, 5-3 C-USA) vs. Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns (8-4, 5-2 Sun Belt)

The Why:
This is the annual show down between Conference USA and the Sun Belt. No more smack talking, lets settle it on the field, boys. Throw out the record books, katy bar the door, this is why you watch the bowl season, perhaps. Or maybe it’s the last chance to make all the money back you blew on the other three games on Saturday. I’m not here to judge, whatever floats your boat.

Also, what New Orleans needs is more visitors. This game should set an attendance record. Tulane will be playing in its home stadium. How close is Lafayette? In 2005, when Katrina ripped up New Orleans, the bowl was moved to….you guessed it Lafayette, Louisiana!  Also the Ragin Cajuns have won the last two bowl games here.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
The Ragin Cajuns won 8 games and are co-champions of the Sun Belt. They may or may not have their Quarterback though. Terrance Broadway broke his arm and is uncertain for this game.  The Cajun offense is good. They averaged 40 points per game in the three games before he went down.

The Green Wave have a Montana at quarterback. Nick Montana is Joe’s son. The Wave is 119th in total yards and 90th in points scored. Where is Dwight Clark’s kid?

The game could hinge on turnovers…like every game does. The Cajuns have turned the ball over 7 times in their last 2 games. The Wave are +12 in the turnover department.

Tulane will be playing at home and in their first bowl since 2002 Hawaii Bowl. Give them the emotional edge. Long have ticket sellers dreamed of Tulane playing in this bowl.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
Two Louisiana teams. The Ragin Cajuns have had all the success in the world. They’ve won the last two bowls. The Tulane Green Wave are hungry and eager to impress in their own digs. No one puts the Green Wave in the corner. At home. In a bowl.

You just can’t beat the Ragin Cajun nickname though. Its too bad every college didn’t put this much thought into picking a mascot. Perhaps Stanford would have chose something besides a color. Or perhaps the SEC would have teams called something besides Bulldogs and Tigers.

The Vegas Edge:
Tulane is a 2-point favorite. The over/under is 49.5. The Wave are 9-3 ATS, while the Cajuns have been a woeful 4-8.

Both quarterbacks are banged up in this game. You might think about the under here.

The Sweatpants Verdict:
It’s a home game for Tulane, but the Cajuns have been here before. If Broadway plays for ULL, I think they have the firepower. Montana or not, the Green Wave offense is pretty bad. Make it three in a row.

ULL 30  Tulane 21
