PS Bowl-A-Thon 2013: Sun Bowl

-->
Here you go kids, get pumped up for the Sun Bowl.

The When/Where:

Tuesday, December 31st at 2 p.m. EST. Sun Bowl, El Paso, TX. CBS

The Who:

Virginia Tech Hokies (8-4, 5-3 ACC) vs. #17 UCLA Bruins (9-3, 6-3 PAC12)

The Why:

The second oldest bowl, the Sun has been played continuously since 1916. It has been on CBS since 1968, I have no idea what the people at the Sun Bowl have over them, but it must be bad.

UCLA won on the road at Nebraska and at USC.  Their losses to Stanford, Oregon and Arizona State were all good losses.  It was a good year for the Bruins who finished as a runner up in the PAC 12 South.

Virginia Tech lost the opener to Alabama and then survived triple overtime with Marshall. They finished second in the ACC Coastal.  The beat arch-rival Virginia to cap the regular season 16-6.  This is their 21st consecutive bowl.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:

The Hokies cannot run the ball. They are 111th in rushing and 97th overall in points scored. The Hokies will likely rely on the throwing arm of Logan Thomas to get some offense, he has thrown for 16 tds and 13 ints. However, Beamerball has always been about special teams and defense. The defense lead the ACC in sacks and in the national top ten for interceptions, rush defense and pass defense.

UCLA counters with dual threat QB Brett Hundley who has 3,432 total yards and 31 touchdowns. The offense scores 36 ppg. The Bruins oddly have the PAC-12’s Freshman of the year on both offense and defense in Myles Jack. You don’t see that much anymore.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:

I still don’t know what a Hokie is and what is with maroon and orange together?

I own a UCLA hat from the college world series. Most people think it’s a Boston hat because its dark blue, instead of powder blue. But whatever. Also, I really don’t like Steve Alford. But hey this is football, so lets go with Jim Mora.

The Vegas Edge:

UCLA is the 7-point favorite.  Underdogs are 6-1 ATS in the lost seven Sun Bowls. The over/under is 47.5. The good news for the Bruins is that they are unlikely to repeat last year’s debacle with Baylor embarrassing the defense. The under might be the play with VA Tech’s awful offense and suffocating defense.

The Sweatpants Verdict

This is a good game with two good teams.  Points should be hard to come by for both teams. I just don’t see how Virginia Tech scores enough to win.

UCLA 21 VA Tech 13.
