PS Bowl-A-Thon 2013: BBVA Compass Bowl

BBVA Compass is a bank. Who knew?

The When/Where:
Saturday, January 4th at 1 p.m. EST. Birmingham, AL. ESPN.

The Who:
Vanderbilt Commodores (8-4, 4-4 SEC) @ Houston Cougars (8-4, 5-3 AAC)

The Why:
The Bowl features (endures might be the better word) the #9 SEC team and the new American conference. Vandy actually came in 8th in the conference and Houston finished 4th.

Vandy pretty much lost to who they were suppose to lose too. They did upset #15 Georgia mid-season.

Houston doesn't have a marquee victory to it's name. They fell to the top of the AAC and an engagement to BYU.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Both teams are passing focused offenses. Vandy is the 99th, 66th and 94th ranked rush, pass and total offense putting up just 29.2 ppg. They try to win with defense. The 43rd, 21st and 23rd ranked rush, pass and total defense holds opponents to 24.7 ppg.

Houston's offense is slightly better. The 33rd ranked scoring offense, they score 33.9 ppg. They are the 94th, 23rd and 54th ranked rush, pass and total offense. In one of the more strange stat combos this season Houston is the 37th, 116th and 85th rush, pass and total defense. But they only allow 20.2 ppg, good for 12th in the nation.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
Cougartown is starting next week. I think that's a sign. Cougars!!!

The Vegas Edge:
Vandy -2, O/U - 52.5

Vandy went 6-6 ATS on the year and 7-4 against the total. Houston was really good this season going 10-2 ATS. And most games hit the under at 5-7.
The Sweatpants Verdict:
I like Houston in this one. Vandy is past the whole "We made a bowl!" thing and can't be motivated for this one. Not to mention I think Houston is just a bit better. Vandy is getting the SEC bump, but I think Houston squeaks this out.

Houston 33 - 30
