PS Bowl-A-Thon 2013: Rose Bowl Game Presented by Vizio

So yeah this is totally a thing.

The When/Where:
Wednesday, January 1st at 5 p.m. EST. Rose Bowl, Pasadena. ABC.

The Who:
(5) Stanford Cardinal (11-2, 7-2 PAC 12) @ (4) Michigan State Spartans (12-1, 8-0)

The Why:
It's the one every little B1G and Pac-12 fan dreams of. The Grandaddy of them all.

Stanford returns as not only the Pac-12 champ, but the reigning Rose Bowl champ. Falling to Utah and USC on the road is why Stanford is here and not in the Championship game.

The Spartans make the trip to Cali for the first time in 24 years. After shutting down Ohio State in the B1G championship game. A loss to Notre Dame early in the year and a weak schedule keeps the Spartans out of the big one.

What Smartypants Accounting Guy Would Tell You:
Like defense? Then this is your game. Featuring the 4th and 9th ranked scoring defenses, neither gives up more than 18.6 ppg. MSU is the better of the two defenses, but just barely. The number one total defense they are the second rush and fourth pass defense. Stanford is one behind them in rush defense but come in at the 89th ranked pass defense.

Offensively Stanford has the edge. They put up 33.2 ppg and have the 22nd, 91st and 62nd rank rush, pass and total offense. The Spartans do what they need to let the defense win them the game. The 58th scoring defense they only put up 29.8 ppg. They boast the 51st, 91st and 83rd ranked rush, pass and total offense.

Looking at the adjusted number Stanford gets the edge as the 3rd ranked team. Michigan state comes in at 9th.

Pool Prognosticators Pattern:
I never understood why Stanford's mascot is a tree. I still don't. But that band is crazy man. Crazy!

The Vegas Edge:
Stanford -6.5 Over/Under is 41.

Oddly that is the same line as last year.

Neither team was a sure bet this year. Stanford went 7-6 and MSU was 8-4-1. What did usually happen was the under hit. Both teams were 5-8 against the over.

The Sweatpants Verdict:
Well, what I do know is this is going to be one hard-hitting, smash-mouth football game. Anyone under 30 will absolutely hate it. MSU is missing their starting middle linebacker. Which hurts a little, but this defense is so good, I think they'll plug the hole. And both Utah and USC have good defenses. I think MSU will give Stanford fits. But at the end of the day, Stanford walks away with the win.

Stanford 24 - 17
